Dogs

Dogs have been pets of humans for thousand of years. Nobody is quite certain when or why dogs first became domesticated. Perhaps dogs took food from prehistoric humans in return for warning of the approach of dangerous animals. It is generally thought that domestic dogs are descended from wolves, but jackal may be an ancestor. Or the dog may be a cross between the two animals.

Domestic dogs generally have long snouts with up to not retract, like those of domestic cats, so most wild dogs, the domestic dog eats quantities of biscuits and other non-meat food. When dogs run wild they will eat plant material as well as hunt animals.

Over the millennia that dogs have been kept by humans, the original dog has been selectively bred to produce a wide range of different breeds. Each breed has a different characteristics, depending on the task for which it was breed may be the bloodhound, bred to have a keen sense of smell to follow deer and other game thorough dense forest.

Cats

All Cats, no matter what their size, belong to the family Felidae, part of the carnivore order. Like their larger cousins, the leopards and lions, the small cats display all the special characteristics of cat family. They have flexible and muscular bodies together with supple and powerful limbs. All the smaller cats have claws which can be retracted to keep them sharp for hunting.

Wildcat usually preys on almost everything it can catch and kill, but usually hunts birds and small mammals. Kittens are born in a nest built in a hollow tree or dug out of the ground. Until they are about five weeks old they are almost helpless, but then begin to learn how to survive and hunt for themselves. At five months the kittens are fully grown and live independently lives.

It is thought that the domestic cat was bred from the wildcats, though the Libyan cat may also have been its ancestor. Nobody is certain why cats were domesticated. It may be that their ability to hunt rats and mice brought them together with humans.

Over the centuries the cats have lived with humans, they have been carefully bred in order to produce different breeds. Some of these breeds are named after the areas where they were first created, such as the Abyssinian, Siamese, Persian and Siberian.
